In a recent statement, Rep. Russ Diamond (R-Lebanon) criticized Gov. Josh Shapiro's budget proposal, stating that it would have a detrimental impact on Pennsylvania's future. According to Diamond, the governor's plan would deplete the state's savings by raiding $15.9 billion from the General Fund surplus and Rainy Day Fund balances.

Diamond highlighted that the governor's proposal represents an 8.4% increase in spending over the current fiscal year. He expressed concern that the excessive spending would come at a cost to the taxpayers. Diamond stated, "I’m sure it is fun to stand behind a lectern and grant the wishes of every agency and special interest group. However, it will fall to the 203 House members and 50 senators to craft a more reasonable spending plan. The hard work begins now."

The representative also criticized the delays in the previous year's budget negotiations, which resulted in a finalized budget seven months behind schedule. Diamond emphasized that these delays negatively impact important human services programs and create difficulties for public school districts in estimating their K-12 revenue for each year.

One of the key aspects of Shapiro's proposal is the incorporation of revenue from the legalization of recreational marijuana. However, Diamond, a supporter of the medical marijuana program, expressed strong opposition to the legalization of recreational use. He stated, "When I talk to my neighbors in Lebanon County, they tell me they are paying more and more for groceries, gasoline, utility bills, and other everyday costs. This is not the time to saddle them with unsustainable spending from the state, which will ultimately lead to tax increases down the line. We need to learn from those we serve and live within our means financially."

Diamond's concerns reflect a growing sentiment among Pennsylvania residents who are worried about the potential consequences of excessive government spending. The representative's call for a more responsible and sustainable budget plan resonates with many who believe that it is crucial to prioritize the financial well-being of the state and its citizens.

As budget negotiations begin, it is clear that Diamond will be a prominent voice advocating for fiscal responsibility. His dedication to representing the interests of his constituents and his commitment to ensuring a sound financial future for Pennsylvania make him a key figure in the ongoing discussions.
